Probably one of the most common product questions I get is about foundation, and which ones I would recommend.
Foundation is probably the most important makeup product to get right. It can also be the trickiest, because there’s so many different elements that all need to work. The colour needs to be a perfect match, the formula needs to work with your skin type, then, of course, there’s finding one that offers the right coverage and overall fit for your needs.
I hate to think how many foundations I’ve purchased over the years, but I find I increasingly go back to the same ones.
Here are my top three that I reach for time-and-time again:
MAC Studio Face and Body Foundation
You’ll find this foundation in almost every professional makeup artist’s kit because, quite simply, it’s probably one of the best light-to-medium coverage foundations on the market. It’s a cult classic that’s stood the test of time and it’s been a mainstay in my makeup kit for years.
It goes on super sheer, but can easily be built up to offer a medium coverage. It’s super easy to apply, doesn’t cake, is lightweight and stays put all day. It has a dewy to semi-matte finish, so if you’re after a pure matte coverage, you’ll need to use powder, or give this foundation a miss.
It has a wonderfully semi-translucent quality too, so if you want something really sheer that let’s your natural skin shine through, then this is the foundation for you.
Because it contains a really strong film-former, it is also extremely long-wearing and also water resistant. You can actually see water roll off it.
I tend to use my fingers to blend this product in. Sponges and brushes eat through the product, and as it is sheer it’s easy to get a flawless finish without blending tools.
The packaging isn’t particularly glamorous, but, after all, while pretty packaging is nice, what really matters is the product inside.
Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation and Concealer
I’ve been a fan of this product since it launched a few years ago, beating MAC’s Pro Longwear as my favoured full coverage foundation.
It’s extremely pigmented, so a small amount of this product goes a long way. It offers excellent coverage, but doesn’t look heavy or cakey and, despite its full coverage, feels lightweight on. Unlike other fuller coverage foundations, this foundation doesn’t sit heavily on the skin either.
Unless I’m after a heavily made up look I tend to mix this foundation with a little moisturiser for a lighter finish. Then, use it straight from the bottle to spot conceal.
For full coverage I use a Beauty Blender. It gives the most amazingly flawless finish. Due to its highly pigmented formula get colour matched at a Clinique counter.
Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua
This is a wonderfully light-weight foundation which gives a lovely semi-matte finish. Despite the fact it’s super light-weight it actually offers pretty good coverage, but, I find that I still need to spot conceal with this product. I love the fact that it also has an SPF too.
It’s a water based foundation, meaning you need to shake the bottle well before applying as it does have a tendency to separate.
I apply with my fingers, because, like the above-mentioned MAC Face and Body Foundation, sponges and brushes will just eat through this product creating too much wastage, and you just don’t need application tools with this type of formula.
It comes in an easy to dispense bottle too, meaning you can use every last drop.
