Six gorgeous trends to rock this holiday season

The holiday season is officially in full swing and that means not only finding the perfect outfit, but also the right makeup to complete your look.

This season has seen a swathe of wonderful makeup trends that can seriously elevate your look from drab to fab.

Here’s five on trend looks to see you through the holiday season.

Burgundy lips

Burgundy lips are all the rage this year. After years of soft glosses and pink hues, it’s wonderful to see the return of a seriously strong lip colour. For me red lipstick is such a fabulously bold, powerful, and feminine statement.

Pucker up with these two lip colours; Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Blackberry; and, for a more affordable option, NYX Cosmetics Butter Lipstick in Moonlight Night. Both of these go on like a dream and have a wonderfully moisturising formula with great staying power too.

Glossy skin

MAC pro longwear foundation

This year saw a departure from the “no makeup makeup” look to makeup that looks a whole lot more polished, but still not overly done. Opt for a medium finish foundation with a dewy to semi-matte finish. You want a flawless look that allows a hint of your natural skin to shine through.

Try MAC’s Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation. It’s actually marketed as a full coverage foundation, but I find it more medium coverage. It has a beautiful satin finish that still let’s your natural skin shine through – just don’t apply it with a heavy hand.

I love the fact that’s it’s waterproof too – it stays put no matter what. I’ve even worn it swimming! For a lovely dewy look, I mix with my favourite skin oil, Argan Magic 100% Pure Argan Oil. But, it would work equally well with a little moisturizer or a highlighter cream.

Blue lids

Makeup has taken on a seriously 80s vibe this season, with models rocking electric blue lids at recent fashion shows. Blue is a colour that can actually be worn by every skin tone, just don’t overdo it with the rest of your makeup. Make your eyes the star of the show, and keep everything else neutral.

Nail the look with Nars Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow in Acrturus, or try Maybelline’s New York Expert Wear Eyeshadow in Acid Rain for a richly-pigmented blue at a purse-friendly price.

Metallic touches

Stila Gold eyeliner

Metallic colours are still on trend, but this season they are taking on a subtler vibe. So, go for a hint of shimmer instead with Stila’s Magnificent Metals Eye Liner in Black Gold – a gorgeous creamy black eye liner flecked with gold shimmer that catches the light and truly makes your eyes sparkle.

I love this product. It goes on beautifully, stays put throughout the day, and is lovely and subtle. You will however need to invest in a good eyeliner brush to apply this. But hey, small price to pay for eyes that sparkle.

Coloured mascara

Gurlain gold topcoat mascara

Say good bye black and hello colour. Lashes this season have been seen in every hue, but let’s face it, green or pink lashes don’t really work for every day, or even night, unless you want to seriously be noticed.

For a subtler, but equally lovely look, I love Guerlain’s Gold Light Top Coat Mascara, which is part of Guerlain’s limited edition Holiday Collection. Designed as a golden glimmering top coat this mascara gives lashes a gorgeous golden sparkle. Apply to the tips of the lashes for a wonderful festive finish, without looking over the top.

Flushed cheeks

Lancome blush cushion

Beautifully flushed cheeks are in vogue this season, think beautiful rose pinks and subtle reds.

I feel the best way to nail this trend is with a cream or a stain – I find they give a much softer focus natural dewy finish than powders, and they tend to have more staying power too.

I love Lancome’s Cushion Blush Subtil, which offers vibrant colour which you can apply for a subtle to a seriously intense look. Plus, I just love the cushion compact applicator! I’m currently using Splash Corail, but your colour choice will obviously depend on your skin tone.
